Ruby Gettinger, star of the hit weight-loss reality show ‘Ruby’ that ran from 2008-2011, has struggled with obesity and weight gain her entire life. The star recently opened up to ABC News on “20/20” (airing tonight at 10 p.m. ET) about her lifelong battle with weight gain and how she has decided to join the Body by Vi 90 Day Challenge to help her reach her weight loss goals.
After the second season of her show, Ruby had miraculously lost about 150 pounds. With the help of her trainer and nutritionist she seemed as though she was on the way to reaching her goal of 250 pounds, however a few speed bumps came along that stunted her progress.
While on the show she admits that she was essentially starving herself and then binge eating after she would weigh-in. She started to realize she was addicted, going as far as saying, “I didn’t realize this [food] is such an addiction, like alcoholism, drugs, you know?”
At one point, Ruby even ‘secretly’ went to the McDonald’s drive-thru dressed in disguise. Ruby confessed, “I would go through the Drive-Thru — and I’m not kidding you — put a hat on, glasses, so no one would recognize me. … But just in case they’d recognize me, I would have the phone like this and go, Okay, now, what is it that you wanted? … It was two McNuggets? Okay. … That’s just horrible to admit. But it was almost like just that one bite triggers something in me.”
Her addiction, combined with the loss of her brother, caused her to gain 50 pounds after the show ended. At this point Ruby decided it was time to fully commit to a healthier lifestyle and chose to join the Body by Vi 90 Day Challenge.
Now on the Challenge and working out regularly, Ruby is back under 360 pounds and with the help of ViSalus is working to reach her original goal of 250 pounds. Ruby acknowledges that this won’t be easy, but she admits “The hard road is the best road, and just in the past two months I have never worked out [so] hard, been so strict, been so consistent.”
